Daylight savings time ends early Sunday morning, and firefighters are reminding Bay Area residents to change the batteries on smoke and carbon monoxide alarms around the home when setting their clocks back an hour tonight.

Residents should change their alarms’ batteries at least once a year, according to the Central Fire Protection District of Santa Cruz County, and daylight savings time is a good annual reminder.

District personnel are available to install battery-operated

alarms or change the batteries in existing systems for district residents. For more information on this free service, call (831) 479-6843.

Anyone who lives outside the district and is interested in having alarms installed or inspected can contact their local fire departments, according to the Central Fire Protection District.

  1. We do ours as a New Year’s ritual. If I did it by the time change I would never remember if I did it last turn back, or last turn fwd. I guess if you want to do it 2x per year the clock time works, but for the recommended 1x per year, New year’s works as the best reminder for me.
