"...could be due to the poor economy". That's right up there with calling graffiti "murals" and my all-time favorite term, "rap artist".

OK, I'll bite, how does the economy compel people to spray paint walls and destroy fire alarms?

When dad can't get a job. UI benefits suck. Dad is at home yelling at the kids, acting out his anger and frustration, kicking the dog. Mom probably works. The family pawned the xbox. The kids have no place to go, they hop on their bikes and spray paint the town and screw around with alarms hoping for a little adrenalin rush. Rich kids run cross-country and play soccer.
