City manager Kevin Duggan says it was only a few years ago that three newspapers regularly covered City Hall: the San Jose Mercury News, the Palo Alto Daily News and the Voice. But these days, he says, there's really only one.

It seems to me the problem isn't so much MediaNews as it is that your beloved Mountain View residents don't support newspapers like they should. If they cared about getting news about their city, things would be different. Unfortunately, they're apathetic Americans who think everything should be free.

As long as the City Council isn't up to something really evil or boneheaded, why would the average person want to pay attention to what the City Council is up to? Seems pretty normal and sane to want to spend that time paying attention to one's own life.

Seems like the trick is to find the audience of people who are interested, and figure out a business model that works with that audience. It may mean doing something other than traditional print newspapers. Very likely something on the Web.

You rarely see media outlets engage in this sort of self-promotion-as-news. I'm not impressed
