Google will be required to pay a $22.5 million penalty after the Federal Trade Commission charged the Mountain View-based Internet search giant with misrepresenting its privacy settings to its users.

The fines don't fit the crime committed here. $22.5M is peanuts for Google. Unless the fines imposed are really burdensome to companies, they will keep doing this and other violations for eternity. $22.5M is a drop in the ocean. The fines should have been in many billions and that would teach a lesson to Google's business practices. They are an evil company.

I agree jupiterk, I use to think and be proud to live in the city where Google is based. Now I have seen first hand what a huge corporation can do to a city. I would not doubt for one minute that Google made $500 million from planting all those cookies, and its obviously not an accident.

None of that $22.5 million penalty pay out will go to the people who privacy was valuated. Once again Big Brother getting MILLIONS for nothing, while people privacy was a open book for GOOGLE.
