This was also offered in a different fashion at Alta Vista HS. I've volunteered in the construction class last year - found it rather interesting. (complements to MVLA District Assoc. Sup. Brigitte Sarraf for pushing this kind of "hands-on" learning)
These can be fine academic classes! My nephew at Acalanes HS (high performing Lafayette, US #263, LAHS = #404) took "auto shop". My sister advised him to enroll against the advice of the HS counselors. It became part of his essay that got him into UC Berkeley, where he graduated in the top part of his class in Civil Engineering.
hands-on technical careers are just fine for some young people, $80,000 high-end auto tech (with a decade or more experience)
