Summer months treacherous for teen drivers

Original post made on Jul 24, 2013

For parents of teens with freshly minted drivers licenses, the good news is that the Fourth of July has passed. The bad news is, there is still about a week left in July, while August and September lie in waiting.

"27 percent of all motor-vehicle related deaths happen during July, August and September"

This is hardly remarkable since 25 percent of the year happens during July, August and September.

I appreciate your attention given to teen driving. In August 2004 eight teens crammed into an SUV on our small island and took a midnight joyride. Alcohol and drugs were not involved. My twin daughter Sarah was the one teen killed. That early morning knock is as vivid as ever. The mistake we make as parents is thinking it happens to the neighbor down the road or something you read about in the newspaper. The aftermath of that tragic night continues to live on today. WIth a little more communication and vigilance between parents and amongst teens summer can be enjoyed, as it was meant to be.

Those statistics are in the same group as, "78% (or whatever) of all accidents occur within 5 miles of home." Of course they do. Where are you most of the time?
You can infer that or believe that it's just safer never to go home.

The alternate title of this article could be: "Teen drivers make streets treacherous during summer months"
