The City Council approved a gatekeeper request Tuesday which could lead to a massive revamp of San Antonio shopping center, possibly even bringing the spirit of San Jose's Santana Row to Mountain View.

I'm excited about this direction for the SA shopping center! Seems to me that if they really want to bring the spirit of Santana Row to it and make it truly walkable, they'd have to get rid of Walmart, Sears, and Mervyn's. Personally, I'd be fine with that. There's always Target on the other side of Showers.
San Antonio road traffic would surely suffer, but it's going to suffer anyway with the high density housing planned for the Mayfield site.

Finally! Parts of the San Antonio Center are stuck in the 1970s and the rest looks like a poorly laid-out version of a strip mall in Los Banos. There's lots of wasted land covered by nearly empty parking lots, especially around Sears. It's ripe for a walkable mix of housing and stores that could be nicely linked to the Crossings neighborhood and the San Antonio Cal-train station.
This is a good time to begin the planning of what I'm sure will be a very complicated project. The process of getting community buy-in and city approvals alone could take 2-3 years. So Verra, unless your counting on this recession becoming a Great Depression (....gulp, makes me nervous to just type that) the current economy is less of an issue than it seems. Here's hoping the timing works out and this project is ready to go once things turn-around.

At this point there is only the possibility of "multi family" housing on the site. Planning director Randy Tsuda said today that it will still be predominantly retail with the *possibility* of office uses and housing mixed in.
I also spoke with owner Fred Thoits today. It is still unclear what exactly his vision is for the site, but it is apparent that he does not like the words "high density housing."

Just what the area needs ... another yuppified haven for overpriced "designer" clothing, extravagant baubles, and restaurants that charge a week's salary just for some overcrafted and undersized food. Yes, that's exactly what the low-income people of the San Antonio area need.
And don't even get me started on how the security guards at Santana Row treat shoppers who happen to be the "wrong" color or aren't dressed like they're from Los Gatos.
Yes, the shopping center needs renovation, but let's keep it useful for people who actually shop for real things that they need in life. Enough with this conspicuous, credit-fueled consumption that's gotten us into this mess we're in.

I'm in favor of a redevelopment that includes much less parking. Parking is simply a waste of space. Having nicer retail with residences on the second floor (and above) like Santana Row is an idea whose time has come.

I remember the SA center use to be happening place but this was back in the 70s but we can't go back and beside with less stores aroun d will make it hard to fill anything like a big shopping center. Mtn View is growing still why not plan old type business centerm with shops small and big, offices, housing of all mixed types, and other public uses. It sure beats having sea of parking lots or another high end center.

I'm curious to see what the owners are actually proposing - but I'd be surprised if they're planning on attracting the types of high-end stores that are in Santana Row. That won't fly in Mountain View. It's much more likely when they say "Santana Row style" they're talking about the actual mixed-use village layout that Santana Row has, not its tenant mix.

Getting rid of affordable stores would be an awful choice. More housing on San Antonio...not unless they make a completely seperate and safe bike lane the length of San Antonio because that's the only way we'll be able to get from one end to the other.

We need to revamp the whole city, let us be the city with most hybrids, with most solar power, with the most highly trained police officers that will be ready to respond to anything from petty crimes to extreme terrorism,make our schools safer and better than the rest, and let us be a city that will not only look good, but actually BE good.

Give me a break. With all of the economic issues going on right now, this redevelopment is the last thing we need. Can't the city staff find something better to do with their time and our tax dollars !!! Leave this shopping center alone and revisit this so called “Master Plan” in 10 years.
