Project Able, the adult tutoring program, has already fallen victim to the state budget. The MVLA Adult School houses the program and funds a coordinator. The tutors are unpaid volunteers.

Notices were sent out today, March 10 2009, that the program will be discontinued as of June 5 this year.

Even voluntary workers are being laid-off!

How transparent of the California State-house Republicans to wait until the day that the stimulus bill passed to allow the majority to have a budget. Thus they insured that the money made available in Washington was not in time to benefit California's education system, unless it's through the governor's discretionary funds. With political brinksmanship and just plain irresponsible behavior like that, I doubt California will be electing another Republican governor any time soon.

Please read this article to see how much long-lasting damage teacher layoffs do:

The Adult School also includes programs for parents and preschool age children, with some programs targeted at disadvantaged families. It will be a True Shame if any of these programs is compromised. Strong families make a strong community.
