3-way merging of our local school districts?
Schools & Kids, posted by Menage a Trois?, a resident of another community, on Jun 29, 2010 at 7:28 pm

Not sure why this hasn't been covered in the Mountain View Voice or the Los Altos Town Crier but on June 24, the Santa Clara County Grand Jury issued a report on ACHIEVING SCHOOL DISTRICT EFFICIENCY

THROUGH CONSOLIDATION.

Here's the Grand Jury recommendation for our school districts.

Recommendation 1d

The Boards of Trustees should unify Los Altos School District and Mountain View

Whisman School District with Mountain View-Los Altos High School District.

Interesting. I am going to guess this would get a lot of support in MV, and not a lot of support in LA. It does make sense to consolidate where we can, less money spend on administration means more money spent on students.

That would be great!!! We could close some Los Altos Schools and bus kids all over town. We could lessen the crowding at Castro school by busing kids to Almond or Santa Rita in Los Altos. It would probably help push API scores higher since we in MV could benefit from the higher API scores of LA. It would also do wonders for our property values, although we in MV would probably have to pay higher parcel taxes to match those of LA. We in MV would definitely get a better school board as well. And hopefully a bunch of teachers wouldn't get laid off to support the bloated administration team that this would require. DREAM ON!

Seems to be a well thought out report, which is all too rare in these sorts of things.

(Oh, and if you think rolling MV and LA together is controversial... just wait for that Cupertino-Sunnyvale district merger; no way will that happen).
