The county board of education has elected Joseph Di Salvo to serve as its president.
After he was elected in a 5-2 vote Wednesday night, Di Salvo pledged on Thursday, Dec. 9, to “set a new direction” for the board, which he said has become “mired” by internal conflict, distracting the board from its mission of serving the 31 school districts in Santa Clara County.
Di Salvo, who was elected to the board in 2008, will serve one year as president. The new president was born and raised in San Jose and has been working in education for 33 years.
He replaces outgoing board president Anna Song.
