It would be very useful if Nick would include the total amount of Foothill-DeAnza's total budget for this year, so we can get a perspective of what percent cut $8.5 million represents. There have been several stories lately that have talked about budget cuts, but fail to state what the size of the total budget is.

I admire how much the Foothill/De Anza Community College system does with such limited resources. And because of that, it really breaks my heart reading this.

Amazing how our current foreign policy of never-ending wars/occupations in Iraq/Afghanistan/Libya (the proposed withdrawals by Obama don't count because they depend on the continued presence of troops in Iraq and Afghanistan) is eating up the major portion of our national funds while we scramble for the crumbs to assure a future for the youth of the United States.

This crisis is truly weakening our role as a global leader. Silicon Valley would have never happened if we did not have good California schools in the late '80s/ early '90s. I wish there were an evident solution or something local citizens could do to help ease the crisis.

Silicon Valley never would have happened if it were not for WWII, Korea, Vietnam and the Cold War either!

I have little sympathy for Foothill/De Anza with the way it panders to international students. Fees should be raised $1000 percent all around. Enough whining!

Really? Since international students pay up to 7x the tuition costs than in-resident students, NOT having them would necessitate even larger cuts and/or even greater fee increases.

It should be noted too that the community colleges have used several mechanisms for increasing funding in the past: raising tuition, AND floating new bonds that you and I see as new parcel taxes.

So having international students actually helps the fiscal picture, rather than detract from it.
