Burglary on Dana Street Around Town, posted by Editor, Mountain View Voice Online, on Jul 28, 2011 at 9:02 pm
More than $100 in cash was stolen from the register of the Dana Street Roasting Company, and a window was smashed at the neighboring Alberto's Salsa Studio and Ultra Lounge sometime overnight between July 25 and July 26, police said. Investigators believe the two incidents may be linked.

@Jesse likes to post this same question to most/all crime stories, apparently in an attempt to link crime in Mountain View with the Day Worker Center. We don't know why.
He knows where the center is located. It's a disingenuous question.

It was probably the same jerks that stole my kids bike that was locked up on the bike rack at the Mtn. View train station a few nights ago... Why don't people just get jobs like the rest of us & stop being stupid thugs by ripping hard working people off... I agree with SuzyQ... KARMA will come back to bite you... Just wait!

I love how the Voice censors the comments left on these boards. Often a comment is deleted leaving no trace that the Voice even censored. That is the brand of freedom of speech that the Voice promotes. Diversity in everything... except opinion. As long as your opinion aligns with the Voice, you've got nothing to worry about.
Aren't we lucky to live in such a progressive and thoughtful little corner of the world?

I mostly agree with your feeling that we should have no censorship, but in this case I think it's okay. @Jesse is obviously trying to link crime to the Day Worker Center. But instead of saying, "I bet this crime was committed by someone from the DWC, and here are my three reasons why..." he posts the innocent-looking question. This whole line is misleading as he doesn't want to know if it happened near the DWC. Maybe he lives near the DWC and doesn't like it - who knows? But his posts have nothing to do with the articles, except that they are crime articles. And he's using the paper to lobby against a small specific group of people. Habitually. That seems wrong and a misuse of the blog, which has rules, I imagine.

Wow. The commenters here sure have willingly given Jesse a lot of power to annoy them, every time he types those seven little words into a comment. Deleting them, or simply complaining about them only shows that he's "gotcha". Ignore his comments, skip over them to the real ones, and eventually he'll get bored and go away.

Please implement a comment ranking system that will filter out comments that have a significant number of negative votes. A threshold setting change would show more or less comments based on community feedback.
Notably, Slashdot implemented such a comment ranking system. Before that, the site's forums were completely unreadable and it was practically impossible to find helpful commentary. Today, the site is quite readable because bigots/spammers/etc. quickly get their comments down ranked into oblivion and give up.

Note that a comment ranking system preserves freedom of speech and diversity of opinion. It's just a modern and highly scalable way of filtering the cacophony. Manual forum moderation scales very poorly as you are witnessing this evening.
The online community as a whole rates the individual comments. A well reasoned and cleverly expressed contrarian opinion can score very highly.
Manual intervention by a human moderator is rare at sites that have implemented this type of forum management. It's better than blocklists since you're not silencing individuals, just a specific comment.
