Cyclist, train collide near downtown station

Caltrain service was briefly halted Tuesday afternoon after a northbound train and a bicyclist collided near the downtown station.

I can maybe see someone not paying attention and getting hit by the "front" of the train, but how does one not see it and run into "the side" of the train? It's huge and loud and the crossing arms are down with the warning lights flashing. Was the bicyclist trying to commit suicide or something?

Obviously he wanted to commit suicide.
