Mountain View tackles hate crimes, plans for proactive approach
Other Issues, posted by GSB, a resident of the Castro City neighborhood, on Mar 26, 2009 at 2:08 pm

After a spate of recent hate crimes in Mountain View, community leaders said Wednesday that the city needs to take a proactive approach to promoting tolerance.

Several dozen city officials, police representatives, leaders of local cultural groups and others have been attending meetings to discuss what the city and local organizations can do, especially as tensions grow along with the economic crisis. At Wednesday's meeting, they brainstormed ideas and a representative from the anti-hate Not In Our Town public television project proposed using Mountain View as a "model community" for cities nationwide as it begins a fight against intolerance.

Taking acts that are already crimes and saying we're going to consider them to be extra bad if motivated by hate is just a new way for politicians to pander to voters. Anybody else out there sick and tired of being pandered to?
