El Camino Hospital officials have been tight-lipped in the wake of the passage of the salary capping initiative, Measure M — even after a union steward and employee at the local health care organization told a reporter that the measure was a "bargaining chip in the negotiating process" between the union and the hospital.

No wonder the cost of healthcare is what it is. This isn't the only reason but it certainly contributes.Why reward average performance? If this new CEO is so good, why not reduce the guaranteed portion of the compensation plan and increase the performance bonus. Everyone knows that the incentives are the way to make money, if you are successful. If Ryba fails in this new role, why should she be compensated so well. Time to step up to the plate Ryba.

Sometimes "performance" based executives create short term wins for their organizations by slicing through and cutting cost by eliminating staff, procedures and services. This makes the bottomline look great for a short time until the house of cards begins to fall. Most of the time the executives responsible for the created mayhem have moved on by then, along with their bonuses for a "job well done", leaving the carnage for the next one to repair, which can take years and even more money. Does this sound familiar to anyone? Perhaps a good reason for Measure M to have happened. What do you think Tomi?

As a proud member of SEIU and a front line worker at El Camino hospital I am surprised at the amount of money being spent to counter proposition M. When at contract negotiations management stalled our efforts to get a fair contract. They dismissed us with excuses. It was insulting to see the hospital board sniff at our proposals and not take us seriously. But with the passage of proposition M management now see what a determined and organized work force can accomplish. Perhaps now they will bargain with us fairly at our next contract negotiation. It must be understood that this is not a game to us. We the front line workers demand respect because we earned it. We helped make El Camino a great hospital.

I wish to add an additional comment regarding proposition M. As a front line worker at El Camino Hospital it is difficult for me to feel pity for the board members regarding proposition M. I have yet to see any board members at El Camino shed any tears for us when they rule, behind closed and guarded doors, to cut our wages and benefits - where is the outrage there? All that legal expense just to maintain their higher living standards is very revealing - it's all about money! But we all know this. That is why it is so important for us "the workers" to support our union SEIU at El Camino hospital and become ever vigilant against an administration that only has its self interests at heart.
