Gang activity on Stevens Creek Trail

Original post made by Concerned Mtn View Resident, Old Mountain View, on Apr 29, 2008

Has anyone else noticed the increase in gang activity and gang members trawling on Stevens Creek Trail? I have lived in Mtn. View for 7 years and have read in the Voice about numerous assaults and muggings on the trail, especially in the evenings.

It's a shame that what makes the Stevens Creek Trail such an attraction for the general public - an open space that's isolated, filled with lush vegetation and greenery, with easy access to "get away" to different parts of the city, that's free from cars and traffic (including police cars) - also makes it the perfect sanctuary for gang members to get away with crime and other activities.

I wonder if the Mountain View Police Department has ever considered having undercover cops police the trail... maybe on bicycles or even on horseback?

We need protection out on the trail from guys with solid objects. We could use someone to pick up the poop too!!!!

Are you really a qualified profiler? Just because someone looks "shady" to you or wears a hood doesn't make them a gang member... let's not judge books by covers. If you see someone do something illegal, that's different.

I don't know if I am really a qualified profiler. But the rape that was committed last year on Stevens Creek Trail was committed by a young man in a hooded sweatshirt with sunglasses on after the sun had set. I found that out by reading the police bulletin with artist's sketch.

But maybe we should wait until a rape is actually in progress before the police are notified. Suspicious activity is, after all, completely legal. Even when it is preceded and followed by illegal activity.

When it happens in your neighborhood, you will be the first person profiling, trust me.
