single family homes with increased use of in-law units would help. but parking standards that limit street parking and arbitrary square foot minimums don't allow many to take this step. Slow growth needs an alternative to full scale development. increased density should not just be taken up solely by developers and their town homes while a old suburban status quo protects a static single family home process. there is a provision for boarding houses but no specifics. we need to retrofit our suburbs. we need grass roots solutions that changes single family homes into a more flexible arrangements that allow a larger family or group of tenants to live with a couple or a person living in a cottage. that small income can tip the balance on a long term mortgage to do all sorts of interesting changes on a case by case basis by homeowners, and not sell out the problem to developers. At the same time, not just put our heada in the sand as values dictate an unsustainable march to mcmansions. in mountain view there is a long history of this pragmatic rental market. it needs to be protected and harnessed. not legislated into a black market position.
