Girl Scouts brighten senior center with holiday decor

Kudos to Junior Girl Scout Troop 61169. The fifth grade scouts from Springer School spent Wednesday afternoon decorating holiday trees at the senior center for the fourth year in a row! The girls hand-make the ornaments, and pay for supplies with cookie sale revenue. This year they were joined by Brownie Troop 61258, who helped them with the festivities.

Google Chrome OS to compete with Microsoft

Believing that every desktop computer application in use today will be based online someday, Google is developing a new computer operating system that is based on a web browser. The [http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/20/technology/companies/20chrome.html?_r=1&WT.mc_id=fb_nyt819&WT.mc_ev=click New York Times reports] that computers will be sold next year with the Google Chrome operating system, which is quite different from Microsoft Windows in that it utilizes online programs only. A prototype computer using the operating system reportedly booted up in just seven seconds. Google seriously believes that every single computer application will be internet based someday, and that the trend is already "very, very clear." Microsoft believes otherwise, though it reportedly plans to develop new "cloud computing" features for its products as well.

Local tech giants hold "Random Hacks of Kindness" event

In a Mountain View warehouse last weekend, disaster relief experts joined with software engineers from Google, Microsoft, Yahoo and NASA Ames to come up with ways to better use technology in a disaster.
