Rotary Club grants available

The Rotary Club of Mountain View is accepting grant requests for the coming fiscal year, July 1, 2009 to June 30, 2010. The grants will be awarded to community organizations that serve the Mountain View community.

Applications are due March 1, and those postmarked after this date will not be accepted. Recipients will be announced in May. The grant application is available at www.mountainviewrotary.org under the "Useful Links" tab.

Chamber expands mentoring program

A month into his new job as CEO of the Mountain View Chamber of Commerce, Oscar Garcia is pushing to expand a mentoring and interning program for local community college students.

The program pairs De Anza and Foothill College students with professionals for career training, mentoring in their fields of interest and monthly discussions about topics such as personal finance and time management. The Chamber is looking for students who are first in their family to pursue higher education and want to transfer to four-year universities.

The program already has been running for one year, Garcia said, but he is hoping to expand the numbers of mentors and participants. He said this is a rare opportunity for local students, especially since most similar programs in Mountain View are targeted toward younger students.

For more information, contact Garcia at ogarcia@chambermv.org.
