Community Briefs
Art & Wine Festival this weekend
Castro Street will be closed off this Saturday and Sunday as 200,000 people are expected to pour into downtown Mountain View for the 38th annual Art & Wine Festival.
The event runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sept. 12 and 13, and features the work of 600 artists and craft-makers, plenty of live music and an array of foods.
Among the booths will be several local organizations trying to promote awareness and raise funds, including Green Mountain View, which is responsible for recycling bottles and cans at the event.
The Community Health Awareness Council, which provides counseling to children, teens and families, will be raising funds by charging $5 for parking at four lots: Tishman Speyer Corp. at 400 Castro St.; The Swig Company at 444 Castro St.; Kaiser Permanente at 555 Castro St.; and Chase Bank (on Sunday only) at 749 W. El Camino Real.
Local Lions: Give us your used eyeglasses
The Lions Club is now an officially chartered organization in Mountain View, and for one of its first acts of philanthropy, the local chapter is asking residents to donate eyeglasses for people in need.
Club president Hugh Donagher said in an e-mail that his chapter, already 22 members strong, has organized "Eyeglass Recycling Days." Until Oct. 2, residents can place eyeglasses in "zipper style" plastic bags and place them on top of recycling bins for Foothill Disposal to collect. The glasses will be distributed by the club around the world.
Lions Club International, which oversees 45,000 clubs with 1.3 million members nationwide, approved a charter on Aug. 12 for the Mountain View Silicon Valley Lions Club. Julie Nourieh was selected as secretary, Trevor Salman as treasurer and John Bodo as membership director.
In other activities, the local club partnered with the Kiwanis Club to fill backpacks with school supplies for local low-income students.
