Vintage war planes come to Moffett Field

Bookmark and Share
Three WWII-era fighter and bomber aircraft will be available for up-close exploration May 21 through 29 at Moffett Federal Airfield as part of the Collings Foundation's Wings of Freedom Tour, a nationwide tour bringing rare wartime aircraft to the public.

Despite their importance in the war effort, many military aircraft were scrapped after the war for their raw aluminum. The Collings Foundation flies and displays these rare aircraft nationwide to encourage local veterans and families to visit and share their experiences with the public.

On display will be two bombers, a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress Heavy Bomber nicknamed "Nine Oh Nine," a Consolidated B-24 Liberator Heavy Bomber nicknamed "Witchcraft," and a P-51 Mustang fighter nicknamed "Betty Jane."

The planes will arrive at Moffett Field at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 21, and will be on display at the Main Gate near Moffett Field's control tower. The planes will be available for ground tours and display from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, May 21, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. from May 22 through 29. Donations of $10 for adults and $6 for children under 12 are requested for up-close viewing and tours through the inside of the aircraft. Thirty-minute and hour-long flights in the planes are available by reservation for an additional fee.

More information about the Wings of Freedom tour is available at the Collings Foundation's website: www.collingsfoundation.org.
