Should college students focus on science, technology, engineering, math and vocational training?

Asked in downtown Mountain View. Pictures and interviews by Emily Efland.

"I absolutely think that students should be studying philosophy, the arts, literature, and history in addition to technology. Technology might get you a job, but those other things are what make you a fully well-rounded human being."

Jeff Ward, San Francisco

"I'm going to University of Portland next year. I'm studying engineering, so I think that mechanical engineering and the sciences are really important. I think that you should have arts and everything also, but I think that math and science is pretty much the way to go. That will get you far."

Emily Nitzberg, Mountain View

"Given today's technology culture I definitely think college students should still continue studying arts, because you need both the arts and the sciences to make a complete human being."

Amanda Nio, United Kingdom

"I believe that college students should still be learning about history and literature because it's really important to know what America roots from."

Carlos Pacheco, Mountain View

"Students should definitely study literature, the arts, English and history because it makes you more well-rounded for the business market in general, and even to adapt more easily to changes in times and cultures."

Jaclyn Overstreet, San Francisco
