Alexander?s Steakhouse opening a Mountain View bakery

Uploaded: Jan 13, 2014
Alexander's Steakhouse ? which operates two restaurants of that name in San Francisco and Cupertino as well as The Sea by Alexander's Steakhouse in Palo Alto ? is making a foray into new culinary territory: baking.

Signs for the new venture, dubbed Alexander's Patisserie, went up in the windows of 209 Castro St. in downtown Mountain View last week.

"We're going to mimic a fine French bakery or some of the boutique bakeries that they have in Los Angeles," said Josh Rousseu, vice president of "front-of-house" operations at Alexander's.

This means artisan bread, fine pastries and "boutique sandwiches, but I wouldn't consider it a deli in any facet," Rousseu said. They'll also sell their own brand of coffee through coffee company Equator Coffees & Teas.

Alexander's Patisserie will be led by a pastry sous chef currently working at a well-known restaurant in Las Vegas, Rousseu said.

Rousseu (who, according to his Facebook, attended Mountain View High School) said that Alexander's bakes bread in-house for its San Francisco restaurant, but hopes to expand that to all locations with the opening of Alexander's Patisserie "midway through this year."

Expansion of the Alexander's empire comes about a year and some after Jeffrey Stout, chief operating officer and founding chef of Alexander's Steakhouse in Cupertino and San Francisco, was let go just before The Sea opened in Palo Alto in November 2012.

Great, now I can get a $40 cupcake to go with their $150 steaks.

Remember that a nicely served $40 cupcake generates a lot more tax revenue than a $2 scone.

No one is forcing anyone to patronize any given retailer or restaurateur. It's not about you, it's about a wider customer base. The business will not make it or break it on one individual.

One is free to vote with one's dollars, but before one passes judgment on Alexander's Patisserie, why not wait for them to publish actual pricing rather than simply hating them on principle?

Their NY Steak is $58, and most of their desserts are $12. Is not bad for a nice restaurant.

Does anyone know if this project is still going ahead ? I have tried to get in touch with ASPatisserie ...but no reply. Also there doesn't appear to be much going on at the location on Castro. Thanks.

Susan: Last I heard from their people (in March), they had not set an opening date and were still "working out items with the city." Stay tuned for any further updates!

I've seen them working on it this week. Should be open soon!

There is a sign outside the space now citing an October 2014 opening.

Just received a goody bag from a colleague of mine from Alexander's Patisserie! The macaroons look beautiful and I can't wait to try them!
