Japanese restaurant chain eyes downtown Palo Alto

A Japanese restaurant chain called Yayoi will be expanding overseas with a new location in downtown Palo Alto.

Yayoi will be taking over the space at 403 University Ave. vacated by O Sushi, according to new owner names listed on the building's alcohol license. O Sushi suddenly closed in April, with the following handwritten message appearing on a sign in the front window: "Thank you for coming to O Sushi House for last four years. We are moving back to Sushi Tomo (201 University Ave.) for better management."

Employees at Sushi Tomo said at the time that there was a new owner at O Sushi, but declined to comment further.

Yayoi operates under the umbrella of Plenus, a larger food company that manages restaurants in Thailand, Korea, Taiwan and elsewhere and also produces rice and other foods, according to the company's website. Tatsuhiro Teramoto, whose name is listed on 403 University's Alcholic Beverage Control license, is Plenus' chief operating officer. Hideshi Shiomi, the other name listed, is the company's financial officer.

The company did not respond to requests for comment.

Yayoi is a teishoku-style Japanese restaurant. Teishoku means "meal set" and typically includes items like rice, miso soup, a main dish, side dish and pickled vegetables.

"Focusing on the Japanese staple of freshly cooked rice, we prepare finely balanced teishoku that include miso soup, side dishes, vegetables, and other items in a tray," the Plenus website reads.

There are more than 270 Yayoi locations in Japan, plus franchises in Thailand, Singapore and Australia. (Check out Yayoi Sydney's dinner menu here.)

The company is "actively expanding overseas," the website reads.

Eh, not too impressed. It's either going to be the same cheap slop it is in Japan, or they're going to make it into yet another overpriced Japanese restaurant. I'd rather just go to Nijiya or something and make my own food.
