Council members had varied reactions to the Santa Clara County Grand Jury's accusations that Mayor Mario Ambra engaged in "corrupt misconduct," ranging from sadness and surprise to Vice Mayor Sally Lieber's call for Ambra to "resign immediately."

When she first heard the news of the accusations made against Ambra, Council member Rosemary Stasek said she felt "overwhelming sadness."

Stasek said she believes "staff did absolutely the right thing" in reporting the Mayor to the district attorney. She added she has faith in the unbiased judicial process that has occurred so far.

"The independent investigation done by the district attorney made it as fair and objective as it needed to be," Stasek added.

Council member Ralph Faravelli said so far he had no allegiances towards either the mayor or the staff who reported his behavior because the situation is a "hard thing to comprehend ... these are pretty heavy charges and it made me sad that it had to come to this situation."

"I respect both sides," Faravelli said. "I think that our city staff and city manager are great people; I really do ... I've known Mario all my life but I've got to absorb what I've read today further."

"I feel that he should resign now," said Lieber who, as vice mayor, would assume the duties of mayor if Ambra resigns.

"The grand jury took testimony from something like eight city employees under oath, and they all reported behavior that was not consistent with the city charter and was illegal," she continued.

"Politicians don't have a lot of credibility and this doesn't help the situation," Faravelli added. "It makes me very sad for my home town. I'm not saying we're all angels but we try like hell."
