Local teams win in weekend tournament

By Samay Gheewala

Both Mountain View and St. Francis' girls' basketball teams had a strong showing at the Seaside Tournament, held the weekend of Dec. 27-28. Both teams swept through the second round with strong performances from across the board.

St. Francis, playing on Saturday, took out Gilroy 49-35, pulling ahead in the third quarter after a scrappy Gilroy team tied the score 23-23 at the half. Powered by sisters Mary Beth Curley, with 17 points, and Cynthia Curley, with 9 points, including a 3-pointer, the Lancers outscored Gilroy 16-9 in the third quarter and never looked back.

Mountain View had a much easier time against Watsonville, going up 13-3 by the end of the first quarter and building an imposing 23-7 lead at halftime before pulling their starters and cruising to a 35-25 win.

Michelle Peng led the Spartans with 11 points, followed by Biz Lynch with 8 points and Ausharre Harvey with 6.
