(January 16, 2004) Annoying noise from planes and trains
Editor:
I've been a resident of Mountain View for the past 20 years, being a San Francisco native. I've just read the Dec. 26 letter that suggests opening Moffett Field to commercial air operations. Moffett may have been here long before anyone else but I, for one, think it's time for a change. It's a dinosaur whose time has come.
I don't know if anyone else is affected by the noise that is generated from air traffic lately, not to mention the train, but it seems like we're losing quality of life here. This is a residential area which would seem to qualify for some peace and quiet, especially at night. I've been woken up by a very large plane, flying low, at 2:30 a.m. in the morning. I've noticed helicopters flying up and down this area at 4 a.m.
I realize that the author of the letter had been in the Navy and flying the very planes that now seem to be destroying the little tranquility that we once had. He's obviously immune to the noise of it. I don't know what's happened in the last few months but the air traffic seems to be much more prevalent from small planes, and there is more traffic from San Jose and the P3s.
This leads me to the subject of the trains. Is it necessary for the conductor to lean on the whistle a dozen times to let everyone on the Peninsula know he's moving? I think the whole noise issue has gotten ridiculous!
