Murder trial to start in March
Murder trial to start in March
(January 16, 2004) By Jon Wiener
The three suspects in the October murder of Doris Condon will wait at least two more months before entering their pleas.
A crowd of more than two dozen, mostly friends and relatives of the victim or the suspects, attended last Friday's hearing, but they scattered quickly when Judge Diane Northway continued the hearing until March 12 at the request of the attorneys in the case.
Deputy District Attorney Dan Fehderau said that all sides in the case are waiting for the police to finish their lab analysis work before proceeding.
According to prosecutors, Enrique Chavez, a.k.a. Leonel Cantor, entered Condon's Jardin Avenue home on Oct. 25 along with David Olayo and beat the 77-year-old Condon so severely that she died from her injuries.
Chavez is being represented by Public Defender Ed Nino, while Chris Mattison from the Alternate Public Defender's Office is representing Olayo. Jose Sosa, charged as an accessory for driving Chavez and Olayo from the scene, has retained San Jose attorney Jeff Parrish to represent him.
None of the defendants' attorneys had returned phone calls by press time.
