Mountain View edges Los Altos 1-0 Mountain View edges Los Altos 1-0 (January 16, 2004)

By Arcia Dorosti

In a match between two SCVAL rivals on Tuesday, Mountain View's boys soccer team came out on top of Los Altos 1-0. The Spartans scored on a goal early in the first half and made it stand for the win.

The lone goal, scored by midfielder Payvand Milani in the 20th minute of the game, came on a corner kick that was deflected by a Los Altos defender. The ball rolled to the feet of Milani who calmly fired the ball into the lower corner of the net.

Los Altos had several scoring chances in the second half but the Eagles were thwarted by a tough Spartan defense. Los Altos' best scoring chance came midway through the second half on a free kick by Fletcher Adams but Mountain View goalkeeper David Ronconi made a diving save.

Spartan coach Jim McGuirk commended Los Altos for its tough defense and physical play. "They (Los Altos) did a good job of taking us out of our game and not letting us do what we normally do," he said.

Mountain View improved its record to 8-2-2 overall and remains undefeated at 4-0 in league play. The Spartans stand alone atop the standings of the competitive De Anza division.
