Spangler Mortuary named Business of the Month
The City Council recognized Spangler Mortuary as the January business of the month, honoring the Spangler family for its long service and involvement with the city. The business, one of the last family-owned mortuaries in the Bay Area, has been in the Spangler family since 1934, when it was taken over by the grandfather of current owner Jim Spangler.
Spangler Mortuary has served over 20,000 families of all faiths in the last 70 years.
"It was quite an honor," Jim Spangler said of the award. "We think Mountain View's got a special flavor to it. We've always appreciated being a part of it, and we plan to be for many, many more years."
SGI announces profit
SGI held its quarterly conference call Wednesday and was expected to announce an operating loss of $5-$10 million for the fiscal quarter ending Dec. 26, 2003. Notwithstanding $13 million in other one-time operating expenses associated with restructuring and consolidation of headquarters, the company would have recorded a profit, said spokesperson Lisa Pistacchio.
Estimated total revenue of approximately $235 million fell within an expected range announced by the company in October.
