(January 23, 2004) Week of peace
The Teen Awareness Club at St. Francis High School sponsored a "Week of Peace," Jan. 20 to Jan. 23. The week was dedicated to raising awareness about peace, justice and communication.
Peace prayers were read during morning announcements and another student club, Voices of Hope, will distribute petitions for teens to sign in defense of human rights. The week will end with a schoolwide assembly Jan. 23. Paul George, executive director of the Peninsula Peace and Justice Center of Palo Alto, will be the featured guest.
Teens head to Washington
Mountain View High School junior Melanie Hui and Menlo School junior and Mountain View resident Aaron Rosekind have been selected to participate in the National Young Leaders Conference in Washington, D.C. from Feb. 17 to Feb. 22. The local teens are two of 400 youths from around the nation who will participate in the event.
The conference is a leadership development program for high school students who have demonstrated leadership potential and scholastic merit. The theme this year is "The Leaders of Tomorrow Meeting the Leaders of Today." Throughout the six-day conference, students will speak with a variety of people who work within the three branches of government, the news media and the international community.
Graham's 'Word Power'
Graham Middle School students Alyssa Young, Kaelyn Davis and Neeharika Palaka were each grade level champions for the Reader's Digest National Word Power Challenge and will advance to the state level championship Feb. 27.
The students, who correctly answer questions both orally and in writing on vocabulary during the state contest, will get an all-expenses-paid trip to the national championship in late March. The first place national winner will receive a $25,000 college scholarship. The second and third place winners will receive $15,000 and $10,000 college scholarships, respectively.
