Council briefs Council briefs (January 30, 2004)

Yes on J

The City Council unanimously threw its support behind Measure J, the parcel tax that is expected to raise $1.6 million each year during its five-year span for the Mountain View-Whisman School District. It would cost the average homeowner $75 per year.

Pooling a little bit from everybody, "six dollars here, six dollars there," can make a big difference, said Council member Greg Perry. Measure J will appear on the March 2 ballot.
City to state: toughen mobile home laws

Mayor Matt Pear will draft a letter to local legislators and the California Department of Housing and Community Development, urging them to strengthen Mobile Home Residency Law enforcement. Currently, the HCD does not have the ability to enforce the law, and mobile home owners are forced to pursue private lawsuits if they want any legal protection. Council member Greg Perry originally proposed that the letter be written.

A number of local mobile home residents spoke at Tuesday's council meeting to support the move, "requesting the state to put some teeth into the laws that are already there," said Sahara Mobile Village resident Sandy Sandlin.
Surplus land for sale

City Council members voted unanimously Tuesday night to declare four city-owned properties surplus lots and authorized city staff to pursue potential buyers. In their vote, council members asked the city staff to see if it was possible to consolidate one of the properties, a vacant lot on the north side of Wright Avenue between Granada Drive and Beatrice Street, with a neighboring lot in hope of increasing its market value. It will likely be another eight months before the properties are bid on, at which point douncil members have the option to accept or deny the offers.
