Sikh attacked in possible hate crime Sikh attacked in possible hate crime (January 30, 2004)

A minor accused of assaulting a Sikh cab driver in a potential hate crime was arrested by Mountain View police on Tuesday.

The taxi driver was directed to make a pickup at the Biltmore Hotel in Santa Clara on Dec. 21, 2003. When he arrived, six juvenile males entered the cab and gave the driver conflicting and confusing directions to a location in Mountain View.

While the car was moving, one of the juveniles struck the driver in the head, partially knocking off his turban. The victim was instructed to stop on Middlefield Way, and two of the six passengers got out. Three of the four remaining passengers got out at the corner of Middlefield Way and Moffett Boulevard.

The last passenger told the driver to stop at the corner of Middlefield Way and Easy Street and proceeded to make derogatory remarks to the victim. He then punched him once in the face, causing minor injuries, before fleeing.

The victim reported the incident to police, who initiated an investigation to identify all six juveniles. After interviewing the subjects, they were able to identify the suspect who had assaulted the victim and arrested him at 12:45 p.m. without incident at a Mountain View school. The suspect was booked at Juvenile Hall.
