Spartans stay on top
Spartans stay on top
(January 30, 2004) By Reza Kazempour
Two goals and solid defense was all that the Mountain View Spartans needed in order to remain undefeated in the league and give the Monte Vista Matadors their first loss in league play. With the win, the Mountain View girls' soccer team moved up to 9-2-2 overall and 6-0 in league play.
Goals from Dawn Maxey and Lisa Griego provided the Spartans with enough for a 2-1 victory over the Matadors on Jan. 20 at Monta Vista High School. In the first half, both teams failed to score a goal. However, in the 51st minute of the game, Maxey netted on pass from midfielder Kelly Nahman. Ten minutes later, Griego scored an unassisted goal to extend the lead to 2-0.
Both teams went into last week's game with a 5-0 record. The Spartans' relentless defense in the second half played a huge role in the outcome of the game. Spartans Jaci Lee and Abby Damm were solid in their defensive approach, and goalkeeper Jane Doolittle allowed only one goal to pass by her in 61st minute of the game.
The next contest between these two teams will be held on Feb. 19 at Mountain View High School at 3:30 p.m.
