County chief of corrections steps down County chief of corrections steps down (February 13, 2004)

Babcock served two years

The Santa Clara County Chief of Correction James Babcock's announced his retirement Tuesday, a move that was accepted by the board of supervisors.

Babcock, who was appointed in 2002 following a nationwide search, will be retiring effective March 15, but has agreed to serve as interim chief until a replacement can be found.

Officials say his nearly two-year stint in Santa Clara County followed a 32-year career with the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department where he advanced through the ranks until being promoted the Sheriff's Chief Deputy.

"I truly appreciate the opportunities and challenges offered me by the supervisors when they appointed me,'' Babcock said.

"I have been very impressed with the professional staff at the Department of Correction and applaud their commitment to the citizens of Santa Clara County.''

He said he wanted to spend more time with his family and promised the board he would make the transition to a new chief as smooth as possible.
