Local races heat up Local races heat up (February 20, 2004)

On March 2, Mountain View residents will head to the polls to cast their votes, and much hangs in the balance.

Locals will consider Measure J -- a $1.6 million parcel tax measure to support the Mountain View-Whisman School District -- state Senate candidates, and judicial candidates.

Democratic state Senate candidates Elaine Alquist and Manny Diaz are looking for their party's nomination, which will likely lead to a win in November.

The ballot also includes presidential, U.S. Senate and U.S. House primaries, and state propositions.

Proposition 55 puts $12.3 billion towards improving K-12 and university facilities. Proposition 56 allows state legislatures to pass the state budget with a 55-percent vote. Propositions 57 and 58, which must both be passed for either to take effect, free up $15 billion through bond sales to finance the state deficit and require the state to adopt a balanced budget.

For more election information, call the county Registrar of Voters at (408) 299-VOTE or visit its Web site at www.sccvote.org.
