Voices Around Town
(February 20, 2004) Should gay marriage be legalized or outlawed?
Asked in downtown Mountain View. Photos and interviews by Dan Stapleton.
"It should be legal. The whole idea of getting benefits from marriage was to encourage having children, but now not all straight couples raise children and some gay couples do -- it doesn't make sense to deny gays marriage."
Erin Krinard, Mountain View
"It should definitely be legal. People in monogamous relationships should be entitled to the benefits that are conferred on people that are married."
Jeremy Aliason, Mountain View
"I think it should be illegal. I'm more of a traditionalist, and I think a marriage should be between a man and a woman."
Larry Deangelis, Cupertino
"I think it should be legal. To me, marriage is a civil status that has things connected with it like benefits, inheritance and decision-making in a health crisis. And if two people are in a relationship where they trust each other and make that commitment, they should have those civil advantages."
Karla Martin, Mountain View
"I think people should do whatever they want. As long as they don't try to marry me, I'm fine with it."
Andy Howse, San Mateo
"It should be legal. To each their own. I just see so much hypocrisy within the heterosexual community."
Bill Langford, Campbell
