Foothill celebrates Black history

Foothill College will host "Make a Joyful Noise XV Gospel," a concert celebrating Black History Month, at Smithwick Theater at 12345 El Monte Road in Los Altos Hills.

The concert will feature historical black spirituals through contemporary gospel selections, performances by guest soloists, Terrance Kelly's Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir, the Oakland-based True Vine Baptist Church Choir and the Foothill College Gospel and Mass choirs.

Tickets are $6-$12. Tickets will be sold at the door or can be purchased in advance by calling the Foothill College Box Office at 949-7360.
Measure J endorsements

The Los Altos-Mountain View branch of the American Association of University Women has endorsed Measure J, Mountain View-Whisman School District's $1.6 million parcel tax that will go before voters March 2.
Eat ice cream to support schools

Measure J supporters will hold a Scoops Night at Baskin-Robbins on March 1. Twenty percent off all sales between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. will go toward the tax campaign. The ice cream shop is located at 1249 W. El Camino Real.
District gets two free buses

The Mountain View-Whisman School District received two new buses last week under a grant from the Bay Area Air Quality Management District. The free buses will replace older, polluting buses.
Graham student is first in math competition

Daiki Suzuki, an eighth grader at Graham Middle School, placed first in the regional Mathcounts competition held Feb. 7 at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center in Menlo Park.

Mathcounts is a national math competition. Gifted math students from more than 17 public and private schools in Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties competed in the competition.

As a team, Graham Middle School finished third. In addition to Suzuki, members of the Graham math team include Jeffrey Herman, Aneline Gray, James Pollard, Josh Biol, Meng Sun, Neeharika Palaka and Dane Tingleff.
