With local support, Measure 2 passes With local support, Measure 2 passes (March 05, 2004)

Transit plan will raise bridge tolls

Bay Area residents will have to get used to bringing an extra dollar with them when they cross most bridges in the region, since Tuesday's passage of Measure 2 will raise tolls to $3.

The toll increase, which affects all Bay Area bridges with the exception of the Golden Gate Bridge, will fund public transportation improvements, including BART expansions, changes to San Francisco's Transbay Terminal and expanded ferry service.

Measure 2 appeared on the ballot in seven Bay Area counties: Contra Costa, Marin, Alameda, Solano, San Francisco, San Mateo and Santa Clara.

The measure was supported by the majority of voters in every county except for Solano County, where only 27,844 people voted for the measure, compared to 40,266 against it.

The other counties supported Measure 2 to varying degrees. The measure received the most backing in San Francisco, where the number of voters supporting the measure was more than double the number of those opposing the plan.

In the Bay Area overall, according to complete unofficial results released by each county, 633,068 people voted for Measure 2, while 485,544 voted against it.
