(March 05, 2004) Division champs eliminated in playoffs
After taking a 56-46 loss against Branham on Feb. 26, the Mountain View boys' basketball team was held from advancing to the CCS division III quarterfinals.
The Spartans led 38-33 entering the fourth quarter. But with starting center Dan Fischer out with an illness, the Spartans collapsed in the fourth quarter and were outscored 23-8.
Kevin Metsers led the Spartans with 11 points, including one three-pointer. Forward Kevin Harris finished second in scoring with nine points and led his team with eight rebounds. Forward Dustin Johnson also brought down eight boards.
The Spartans didn't fare as well in the three-point department -- they converted only three of 13 attempts.
Under the leadership of coach Bob Heckmann, Mountain View won the division crown and entered the CCS playoffs ranked ninth with a 19-6 overall record.
Mountain View's only conference loss came against Saratoga in early January. The Spartans defeated Saratoga 53-50 on Feb. 18 to win the division.
St. Francis takes down Los Altos, falls to Pioneer
St. Francis' hopes of advancing to the quarterfinals of the girls' basketball CCS Division III playoffs were crushed when the team fell to Pioneer 55-45 on Feb. 26. The Lancers finished the season 10-18 overall while Pioneer, 24-3 overall, advances to the next round.
Cynthia Curley led St. Francis with 15 points and recorded the only Lancer three-point basket.
St. Francis had eliminated Los Altos 69-35 in the first round of the playoffs on Feb. 24.
