(March 05, 2004) Do you think Barry Bonds used illegal steroids?
Asked in downtown Mountain View. Photos and interviews by Dan Stapleton.
"I'd like to not think it's true. It would cast a shadow on his records. I have to go with what he says, that it's not true, until he says it is true."
Ralph Copeland, San Jose
"I think it's true, and I think it's no big surprise. It's going to hurt professional sports, and it's going to hurt the images children and everyone else have of professional athletes."
Eade Jordan, Mountain View
"In general, I'm against drugs in any sport. I don't know if this will affect his career, because they probably won't ever appropriately test for this kind of drug."
Nicole Chang, Mountain View
"The problem is that we want to believe that our athletes can do the things they do naturally, so it's always shocking when we hear about steroid use. Ultimately, they're going to look at this whole thing and decide if Bonds is a liability or a moneymaker for the team. And if they can't prove anything, they won't do anything about it."
Matthew Williams, Mountain View
"Steroids have been around for a long time. People have come out and admitted it, and Bonds has gotten progressively bigger over the years. I don't really have an opinion on it -- it's just an edge athletes think they need."
Brandon Carey, Mountain View
"It's been pretty standard for a while. I hear labs are constantly developing new undetectable drugs. I think Bonds has a lot of fans, and this will probably disillusion a lot of them if it turns out to be true."
Brian Latady, Sunnyvale
