Toddler falls three stories from apartment Toddler falls three stories from apartment (March 12, 2004)

Girl suffers non-fatal injuries

A 2-year-old girl fell three stories from an apartment window on Sunday, suffering serious but not life-threatening injuries, Mountain View police reported.

Police spokesman Josef Kachman said the adults in the apartment in the 1900 block of Latham Street apparently did not notice as the girl made her way into a bedroom, climbing first onto a bed and then higher onto a desk, where a toy she wanted was on a shelf.

A window next to the desk was open, Kachman said, and though it had a screen, the girl apparently leaned on the screen and fell about 23 feet to asphalt below.

Kachman said the girl was conscious and moving when rescuers reached her around 4:30 p.m. She is expected to survive, he said.

Multiple people, including one inside the apartment from which the girl fell, called 911 to report the incident.
