MVHS Battle of the Bands

The Mountain View High School Leadership program will host a Battle of the Bands competition on April 16. The event will be held in the school gym, feature 13 local bands and run from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. The entrance fee is $3. The school is located at 3535 Truman Ave.

MV Quiz Kids place third

Students representing Mountain View High School placed third out of 42 competing schools in the fifth annual Bay Area Quiz Kids tournament. They came back from an early narrow defeat as a wild card team.

Team captain Danny Slate and teammates Alex Adams, Ben Chen, Noam Levy and James Li lost by one point to the team from San Francisco's Lowell High, but came roaring back to beat Hillsdale, Novato, Ygnacio Valley and Mills Valley. Mountain View lost in the semifinals to Harker School on March 27.

Quiz Kids can be seen every Saturday at noon on KRON Channel 4. Mountain View's matches will be shown May 29, July 17 and 24, and August 21.

High school debate team goes to state competition

Four students from the Mountain View Los Altos Speech and Debate Team will compete in the annual California High School Speech Association Tournament, starting April 29 to May 2 at Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill.

The team members who will compete are: senior Dawn Maxey and sophomore Prashant Rai from Mountain View High, and seniors Laurel Lathrop and Shruti Dave from Los Altos High.

Maxey and Rai will be competing as a duo in the Interpretive Speech category. Lathrop, will be competing in the Original Oratory Speech event, and Dave will compete in the Impromptu Speech event.

The students were selected after winning the top places at the Coast Forensic League qualifying tournament that was held last month at Leland High School.

Search for new Bubb principal

Mountain View-Whisman Superintendent Jim Negri said he hopes to have a new principal secured at Bubb Elementary before the end of this school year. Current principal Diana Hallock plans to leave the district in June to pursue other opportunities.

Negri has posted the job on the Association of California School Administrators Web site and said he plans to start interviewing candidates next month. Negri said he has held a number of meetings with Bubb faculty, and the school's staff has filled out a survey, citing what qualities they want to see in a new principal. The superintendent said he has also met with the PTA Site Council and has held one-on-one meetings with individual staff members and parents.

Scholarships for high school seniors

Applications for the third annual John Walsh John Fetz Memorial Scholarship -- presented by the Mountain View Firefighters Union Local 1965 -- are due by May 7. Graduating high school seniors who are planning to go on to college and are Mountain View residents can apply for a $750 scholarship.

Volunteers needed for literacy program

The Mountain View-Los Altos Adult School is recruiting volunteers for its Generation Connection Program: Literacy in the Classroom and Literacy in the Garden.

Volunteers help Castro Elementary School students for two hours on Tuesday mornings and afternoons for seven weeks to develop their reading, writing and vocabulary skills.

MVHS students win Bank of America Plaques of Achievement

Four Mountain View High School students received Plaques of Achievement from Bank of America this year. Those students are: Andrew Frostholm, Tracy Cox, Jessica Hamon and James Li.

Bank of America Plaques of Achievement are awarded to students with outstanding records of performance in one of several general study areas.

Foothill-De Anza receives $1.1 million grant

The Foothill-De Anza Community College District received a $1.1 million grant in software and services from Campus EAI, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to facilitate collaboration among member institutions of higher education in sharing, developing and distributing community source software.

The grant will support the district's Web portal research and development over the next five years. It will also finance the licenses required to power a portal that will serve as a gateway to the World Wide Web and a starting point for accessing Web-delivered content and services. And it will cover the cost of assessment and planning services, on-site installation and configuration of the portal, on-site training for system administrators, upgrades, testing and documentation.
