In meet between rivals, both teams win

Mountain View swam against Los Altos in an official meet on April 8 for the first time since the SCVAL and old DAL leagues merged in 1992. Having swam in the Los Altos pool during league championships and practice meets, the Spartans felt right at home.

The Mountain View girls capsized the Eagles 103-82 to get back on a winning track. As usual, Brooke Bishop led the way, finishing first in the 200-meter freestyle and 100-meter backstroke and anchoring the winning 200 and 400 freestyle relays. Whitney Campbell, Erica Lau and Sarah Wood joined Bishop in the 200 relay; and Campbell, Lau and Janice Miyagi helped complete the 400 relay.

Campbell also finished first in the 50 and 100 freestyle while Lindsey Tice took the 100 butterfly and Sonia Menchavez the diving competition. This victory evens out the women's record to 2-2.

The Spartan boys won half of their events but, once again, a lack of depth cost them the meet, and they lost 96-74. Fred Tran, Tyler Landrith, Steven Quistad and Brian Bishop won the 200 freestyle relay. Tran took the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly while Landrith claimed the 200 and 100 freestyle. Like his sister Brooke, Brian Bishop won the 100 backstroke to ensure a Bishop family domination of the event.

Other star performers were Evan McDonald who finished third in diving, Robert Greg who placed second in the 100 butterfly and third in the 100 backstroke, Ryan Ford who finished third in both the 200 individual medley and 500 freestyle, and Jo-Jo Marino who took fourth in the 50 and 100 freestyle. The Mountain View boys' record is now 0-4.

Mountain View hosts its only meet this season against Palo Alto on April 16 at 3 p.m.

Lancer gymnasts break own record

St. Francis gymnasts achieved the highest score in Lancer history in a meet against Lowell on April 7 with 174.6 points. Lowell finished with 157.

A talented team of freshman and sophomores are led this year by only two upperclass members, Courtney Sinclair, the 2003 CCS all-around champion, and Alysse Zrebski.

Sinclair placed first in the uneven bars (9.6) and Zrebski in the vault (8.6). Linda Lund placed first in the balance beam (9.25), second in the uneven bars (9.45) and third in the vault (8.0) to finish first overall with a score of 35.5. The Lancers swept places one through five in the overall competition. The team is trying to earn a fifth consecutive CCS title.

Los Altos badminton is badly beaten

Los Altos dropped to 0-7 in league play after losing to Monta Vista 13-31.

The boys singles team was defeated 8-1 with number one player, Eric Osbourne, losing in three sets to Ivan Lee (14-17, 15-13, 15-8).

The girls fared slightly better than the boys. The Eagles' doubles team scored the sole victory at 5-4. Singles players tied 4-4, and Minnie Moy, at number one singles, lost 15-11, 15-13 to Monta Vista's Aki Suyama.

MV athletes invited to Top 8 track meet

Track and field clinic

On April 24, Los Altos High School coaches and athletes will host a track and field clinic for middle school students from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the new all-weather track.
