(April 23, 2004) Another sweep by St. Francis
A number one state ranking. Number five in the nation according to USA Today. Number 12 in the nation according to Baseball America. And a 21-0 season record.
If the Lancer baseball team walked away from the Mitty Tournament without the championship trophy, there would have been something seriously amiss.
St. Francis opened the series with a double-header, beating Sacred Heart Prep 11-4 and Edison 5-2. The Lancers gained more momentum after a 6-3 win against Moorpark in the semifinals and then battered Mitty 8-3 in the championship game.
Chris Coleman, the winning pitcher against Sacred Heart Prep and Mitty, ended the tournament 5-0 for the season. Rex Petrill pitched against Moorpark to extend his record to 7-0.
The outstanding hitter for the Lancers was Kyle Spraker, who went 2 for 4 with 4 RBIs against Sacred Heart, 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs against Edison, 3 for 4 with 2 RBIs against Moorpark, and 2 for 3 against Mitty.
Ryan Lee was 3 for 4 with 2 runs and 2 RBIs against Sacred Heart and was 3 for 4 against Edison. Jack Moreci went 3 for 3 against Edison with 2 runs, 1 RBI and a home run. Steve Schields was 2 for 3 against Moorpark with a double, and Matt Long was 3 for 4 against Mitty with 2 doubles and 3 RBIs.
Dan Descalso also went 3 for 4 against Mitty with 2 runs and 1 RBI. He pitched a complete game against Edison that included six strikeouts.
The Lancers will travel to Valley Christian on April 27. The game starts at 3:30 p.m.
Los Altos badminton falls
With four players missing, the Eagles badminton team was forced to promote players from the JV team and suffered the consequences, losing to Lynbrook 34-11.
Number-one boys player Eric Osbourne pulled through, beating Eric Chao in three sets, 11-15, 15-13, 15-7. Osbourne also beat Lynbrook's number-two player, Jimmy Tang, 15-8, 15-1.
Minnie Moy, at number-one girls singles, lost to Lauren Chu, 15-1, 15-0.
Overall, boys and girls singles lost 5-4, 7-4, respectively. Boys doubles fell 8-0 and girls doubles, missing their number-one team, were defeated 8-1.
