Youth benefit breakfast
The Champions for Youth Benefit, a 2004 Challenge Team Champion for Youth Presentation, will be held May 13 at Michael's Restaurant at Shoreline. The breakfast will start at 7 a.m. and costs $40 a person. Jim Summers, a comedian and former prison guard, will give the keynote address.
The Challenge Team is a community-based nonprofit that brings students, school districts, police departments, community organizations, parent groups and health service groups together to prevent alcohol, tobacco and other drug-related problems in the community.
Those interested in attending should RSVP to Mary Moore at mary.moore@mvla.net. Checks should be made payable to Challenge Team/CHAC.
De Anza student newspaper wins 11 awards
De Anza College's student newspaper, La Voz, was honored with 11 awards -- including two general excellence nods for its magazine and online publication -- at the 2004 annual convention of the Journalism Association of Community Colleges (JACC). The conference was held last month at the Wilshire Grand in Los Angeles. La Voz staff competed against students from 52 other colleges in 33 categories.
Lilya Mitelman of Mountain View received an honorable mention for on-the-spot headline writing.
