Lancer gymnasts finish season undefeated -- again
For the fifth year in a row, the St. Francis gymnastics team finished the season undefeated.
Led by senior captain Courtney Sinclair's 9.90 silver medal, the Lancers set a record CCS team score of 48.950 on the uneven bars. Sinclair completed another 9.825 gold medal performance on the balance beam, one of four Lancer medals in the event.
"This is the event that will make or break a championship team," said coach Nancy Kludt of the balance beam. "We didn't hold anything back. Our gymnasts performed very difficult routines, and we were totally focused and completely at home on the beam."
During the meet, sophomore Linda Lund introduced a flawless Yurchenko vault to CCS competition. The backwards-flying vault entry earned her a 9.75 and a gold medal.
Despite finishing uncharacteristically second in the floor exercise, St. Francis took the overall team title. With a CCS record score of 189.50, the Lancer gymnastics dynasty held onto its throne.
Spartan swim teams finish in top ten at CCS
Even before entering the water, the Mountain View boys swim team spent the season battling from behind. With only 10 swimmers and two divers, first-place finishes were no guarantee of team victories.
Following an 0-6 dual-meet season, the Spartans moved up from seventh place to fifth at league championships and finished ninth in CCS.
Tyler Landrith took fifth in both the 200 and 100 free while Fred Tran finished seventh in the 100 fly and eighth in the 100 back.
The ninth-place CCS finish was the best for the Mountain View boys since several top five finishes in the 1980s.
For the fourth time in five years, the girls' team placed fifth in CCS.
By winning the 50 free and 100 back, senior Brooke Bishop remained undefeated in individual events for her entire career at Mountain View.
The team of Bishop, Whitney Campbell, Erica Lau and Rebecca Koch finished second in both the 200 and 400 free relays.
Senior diver Sonia Menchavez's sixth-place performance was one of the highest CCS finishes for a female diver in Mountain View's history.
Scholar-athletes honored
CCS announced that two local teams had finished their regular seasons with the highest average grade-point averages among all teams in their respective sports. The Los Altos girls gymnastics team turned in a 3.53 GPA. St. Francis boys tennis finished highest in their group with a GPA of 3.61.
