Volleyball team takes bronze medal

Earlier this month, the Bay to Bay 15s team, led by St. Francis volleyball coach Mike Rubin, placed third at the USA Boys Junior Olympic Volleyball Championship in Austin, Texas. It was the only medal won by any Northern California team at the competition.

Mountain View High student Elliot Wang joined team members from around the Bay Area to finish behind undefeated gold medalist, Envol, of Puerto Rico, and silver medal winners, Ultimate 151, from Chicago.

In the competition, 349 teams from throughout the U.S. participated in seven age groups, 12 through 18.

Bishop falls in prelims

Mountain View High School graduate Brooke Bishop placed 39th in the 100-meter backstroke with a time of 1:05.26 at the Olympic preliminary trials on July 8 in Long Beach

On July 13, she placed 37th in the 50-meter freestyle preliminaries in 26.65 seconds.

Bishop would have needed to place in the top 16 in order to advance to the next round.

In the end, Jenny Thompson and Kara Lynn Joyce earned trips to Athens in the 50m freestyle as did Haley Cope and Natalie Coughlin in the 100m backstroke.

It was Bishop's first time at the Olympic trials, and it may not be her last. An incoming Stanford freshman and three-time Senior Nationals finalist, Bishop will continue to compete.
