County teachers back in the classroom
(August 06, 2004) Santa Clara County elementary school teachers began a week of classes on Aug. 2 to learn new methods for teaching science that will support state content standards.
The science institute is co-sponsored by National Semiconductor and Intel Corporations, according to a Santa Clara County Office of Education spokeswoman.
Classes concentrated on the physical sciences and electricity for fourth grade teachers while focusing on chemistry for fifth grade teachers.
"Studies indicate that hands-on and interactive projects help students learn,'' County Superintendent Colleen Wilcox said in a prepared statement. "With this new institute, we hope to enhance the skills of teachers to further stimulate children's interest in science.''
A majority of the teachers expected to attend are from schools in disadvantaged neighborhoods, according to the spokeswoman.
