Child's play with candles leads to fire
(August 13, 2004) Children playing with candles sparked a fire at a Mountain View duplex on Aug. 4, fire department spokesperson Lynn Brown announced last week.
Fire units responded at 7:59 p.m. to reports of smoke coming from a duplex at 225 Murlagan Ave., according to Brown.
Firefighters immediately searched the building and were able to extinguish the blaze around 8:16 p.m.
Brown said firefighters contained the fire to one room with an estimated property damage of $20,000.
Fire investigators determined that children playing with candles accidentally lit bed sheets, which ultimately turned into a structure fire.
Brown said that although there were no injuries, the incident draws attention to the importance of fire safety for children.
The National Fire Protection Association recommends keeping candles out of the reach of children and never allowing children to be alone with a lit candle.
